I'm all about Girl Power. And as you'll come to notice, I'm also all about Beyonce. However, what makes her a true inspiration is at times out-shined by all the glitz and glamour. Through her music, documentaries and interviews its clear that like myself Beyonce is all about female empowerment. Perhaps the most female empowering thing shes done gets very little attention. So lets change that right now... Introducing: The Suga Mamas.
Just in case you missed Beyonces mind blowing Super Bowl XLVII halftime performance (or just about every live performance she's done since 2006), The Suga Mama's are a 10-piece, all female band hand picked by the diva herself.
“When I was younger I wish I had more females who played instruments to look up to. I played piano for like a second but then I stopped..." “...I just wanted to do something which would inspire other young females to get involved in music so I put together an all-woman band.”
Of the fierce girl gang ranging from drummers, to saxophonist to keyboards most of them are classically trained. Graduating from prestigious schools like Berklee College of Music and Bootsy Collins' Funk University, between concerts the ladies teach improvised jazz classes to music students. And lets not forget Bibi McGill, Musical Director, guitarist yoga teacher and overall bad ass. Strumming her guitar strings since age 12, McGill has a degree in Musical Scoring and Arranging from the University of Colorado and has played for artists like Pink and Paulina Rubio. As if her career wasn't already inspiring enough, she finally got her big moment when she graced the Super Bowl halftime stage with a solo last week.
Along with her ferocious band, Beyonce has also hand pick her backing vocals (nicknamed The Mama's), and now famous dancers Ashley Everett and Kimmie Gee completing her fierce female army of beauty, brains and talent.
