Every few years or so, a show airs like Sex and the City, Gossip Girl, Cashmere Mafia and Lipstick Jungle (and probably a dozen other shows that my 1992 birth year makes me oblivious to) that gives its viewers a little taste of what its like to be a New York City girl...and for us city girls, a new group of girlfriends to relate to...or not.
GIRLS, is the latest HBO series about four women living in The Empire City. Not to be compared to the former HBO hit series Sex and the City though, who's lead character was also a writer. GIRLS is a more realistic portrayal of life as a 20-something trying to make it on your own. The lack of money, indecisiveness and harsh road to self discovery all the while trying not to drown in-New York City living-expenses is all present in this 30 minute emo-comedy. Not to mention the the random scenes of classic experimentation gone wrong, like when Soshanna accidently smoked crack instead of weed at a Brooklyn warehouse party, started panicking, stripped and ran the streets of the neighborhood. Or when Hannah falls asleep drunk on the train, and wakes up (purse gone) in Coney Island the next day. GIRLS has it all, drenched in that sarcastic, raunchy, witty classic Judd Apatow style humor.
I admit GIRLS isn't for everyone, but neither am I. So that probably explains why I love it so much.
That's score #2 for HBO!
